A 20 cm or 30 cm square is cut into seven pieces - specific shapes as set out by the tradition - which you can then arrange yourself to make different shapes, as well as re-assemble into the initial square design. The Chinese puzzle is made up of five right-angled triangles (two large, one medium and two small), a square and a parallelogram. These pieces are called tans, and the purpose of this puzzle is to form a shape using all seven pieces with no overlaps, being given just the silhouette. Created during the Song dynasty (960-1279) in China and reaching the Western world in 1815 when it was first brought to America, there are currently over 6,500 possible tangram configurations, which is an ever growing number.
Put your own personal twist on this ancient classic and make your own tangram puzzle using your photos. You can use a single image, create a montage and even add text or icons. Personalised tangram puzzles come in two different size options, and you can choose whether to print on both the front and back or just on the front.
When you make your own tangram puzzle, it is handmade to order in our bespoke facility by printing professionals. Each personalised tangram is supplied in a cute fabric pouch with a satin ribbon drawstring, to help you keep all of the pieces together.
